Helping People Means Helping Kids Grow Through Sports

As a reflection of our ongoing commitment to Helping People, Shawn Curry Law sponsored an intermediate (ages 7 & 8) baseball team participating in the West Hanover Baseball Softball Association's Spring League (in Harrisburg, PA).

"It is easier to build strong children than repair broken men." - Frederick Douglass

Life has changed significantly since I was a kid.

Technology has taken over and we live in a mobile society. In my day, Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell was the only teen with a cell phone. Now, some kids in elementary school have their own iPhone.

Today, more families are split and the Leave It To Beaver family model is a thing of the past.

Kids can no longer run the streets unsupervised from dawn until dusk. Bicycle rides several neighborhoods away and regular pick-up baseball games with a rag ball or sock ball have been replaced by iPads and X Box.

This doesn't mean that family doesn't matter. It doesn't mean that real-time moments for life lessons no longer exist.

Growing up, participation in organized youth sports provided me some of my greatest memories. With the benefit of hindsight, these experiences also offered many character-building opportunities. Hard work, sacrifice, discipline, perseverance, and a commitment to others were all attributes that my parents preached, coaches coached, and athletics demanded.

Through participation in athletics, kids are afforded an opportunity to apply, experience, and build character.

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ironically, these kids reminded me of one of life's most basic and important lessons: to have fun; to approach life with passion and enthusiasm.

As we grow and begin to take on more responsibilities, it can be easy to allow these "burdens" to weigh us down. Consequently, we may miss the opportunity to enjoy life in the moment or an opportunity to improve our life when it is staring us in the face. For some, these burdens can become unbearable resulting in criminal problems and/or drug and alcohol abuse.

For kids participating in sports, it can be a long season. From game to game with ups and downs, it can be a grind.

According to the National Alliance for Sports, 70 percent of kids participating in organized youth sports will quit by age 13.

As parents and role models, we need to make sure that our children do not lose their passion and enthusiasm for life. If their passion changes to a constructive activity other than sports, we should encourage it. However, we do not want to see kids dropping out of sports due to misplaced values or perceptions. For example, kids may become so accustomed to winning that they quit when "the going gets tough" or they are pushed so hard that they are burnt out by the time they are in a position to actually peak.

In an effort to reward the kids for their hard work and commitment to their team, as well as promote self-confidence within each of them, Shawn Curry Law awarded each player a personalized baseball jacket with their name and number on the sleeve at the end of the season team picnic (Pictured above).

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to carry on that counts." - Winston Churchill

The greatest of life's lessons are often found in "failure" and hardship, not immediate success. Life's hardships are only defined by failure if we allow them to be. Instead, mistakes and the resulting hardships often offer an opportunity to test and strengthen are will to succeed. Therefore, failure is not inherent in the mistakes we make but, rather, a consequence of our inability or unwillingness to learn and grow from them.

Therein, lies the catch: we all need opportunity. Sometimes we need someone else to step in, create that opportunity, and provide us support along the way. Youth sports need sponsors, coaches, and families working together to help our children grow equipped with the tools they need to be successful in life. People accused of crimes need an attorney to help them identify the legal and practical issues that have placed them in their situation and provide them an opportunity to restore their life.

In life, success is not defined by wins and losses; it is defined by our resolve to never give up - on ourselves, on one another.

Shawn Curry Law is also a proud sponsor of the Central Dauphin Youth Wrestling Association.
